VeriSign, ClearChannel Expanding Dedicated Text Message Network
by Russell Shaw
A major push forward for branded local mobile messaging services should come out of a deal announced earlier this week between VeriSign and Clear Channel Radio.
VeriSign isn’t exactly a stranger to this service set. VeriSign powers 60% of all intercarrier SMS traffic in North America.
The radio station owner and the digital infrastructure provider said that it would add a text-message infrastructure capability to broadcast outlets in nearly 100 more markets than the current 100 enabled at the service’s launch in New York just last month.
This is not a general mobile messaging service, but one facilitated for direct mobile communications between listeners and their radio station.
The service enables listeners to send text message from their mobile devices to their local Clear Channel station’s studio, as well as participate in contests, receive a text alert before their favorite song plays, and to make requests and dedications.
The offering includes:
SMS services that allow listeners to exchange text messages directly with radio stations.
A customized WAP mobile portal that presents each station’s look and feel, and allows listeners to view and purchase available content and services.
A J2ME portal that is installed on the consumer’s mobile device, allowing listeners to access station-specific services, and even purchase content and services.
I think this is only the beginning of what will prove to be very common dedicated text messaging networks between brands and their customers.
